ARTIST STATEMENT 2007

This current body of work was created with the intention to learn more about the process of etching, and to push the scale and level of detail in my work. the conceptual aspect of this grouping of images was realized slowly and over time. through the physical process of creating, i was able to see and begin to understand more of the reason why i'm compelled to create.

i believe this body of work is based on a subconscious effort to connect the visual symbols of my past and present, and the two opposite environments i have inhabited. images of the forest and its' animals, juxtaposed against urban structural elements is a visual pairing that i find inspiring. when searching for imagery to etch into the steel plates, my intention was to find images that felt iconic and powerful. I am captivated by symbols and icons. the elements of design within iconic imagery can have such strong ideologic connections that they cause overpowering physical reactions. because of this, there is a mysterious quality within icons .

these pieces are icons that represent my past and present, and also the struggle between humankind and our natural environment. I look to both natural and man-made forms to find shapes, patterns and arrangements that connect the two halves. when placed together, this dichotomy of visual environments can create a perfect balance. this series of pieces attempts to convey the unity in these two forms of design.
